Happy Diwali 2022. Diwali (Hindi), literally meaning “rows of lights”, is an Indian festival that celebrates good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, truth over falsehood, light over darkness, etc. It is celebrated across India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Maldives, Fiji, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, Surinam, French Guiana (French overseas department), and many other regions around the world by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, Buddhists, Christians, Zoroastrians, atheists, animists, Muslims, Jews, etc. It marks the end of Autumn season and the start of winter in the northern hemisphere. It is observed mainly on the third day of the lunar Hindu month of Chaitra (March – April).
On this day, Indians celebrate the triumph of good over evil, knowledge, wisdom and enlightenment. The victory of Rama over Ravana, the defeat of demon king Bali by Vishnu, the ultimate victory of Krishna over Kamsa, the success of Lord Shiva’s killing of demon Mahishasura, and the victory of Goddess Parvati over demon Tarakasur, etc., are celebrated. The whole country goes gaga with happiness and rejoices together.
The main tradition of Diwali is lighting lamps and candles, a symbol of good luck, prosperity and happiness. People visit their neighbors and offer sweets and gifts. On the third date of Diwali, families gather together and exchange sweets and gifts.
Another interesting thing about Diwali is that it is considered a Hindu festival but is also observed among Sikhism and Jainism communities as well.
For the first two days, all the shops are closed and everyone goes back to their respective homes. People stay awake late at night and watch fireworks.
On the last day of Diwali, people go to temples and pay homage to God by offering prayers and performing puja rituals.
Diwali is basically the biggest celebration of the year and is celebrated throughout the whole country.
